A convincing appearance of violence is necessary to get coverage from the media, which is not the objective for most protestors.
There are 2 experiences in attendance at a meeting to plan a demonstration:
1_ experienced fighters in a war of ....self-defence for years, ( and friends and supporters in solidarity who feel their pain.)
2_ experienced demonstrators who ...postpone war forever.

The experienced fighters are those with hands on experience of being oppressed, such as First Nations and others, who are already in a war.
The experienced fighters may want war at the demonstration knowing the media is never less than 100% against their agenda anyway.
The experienced demonstrators won't fight, and only demonstrate for free advertising. This can disappoint or offend the oppressed.
The Black Bloc is an occassional media tool, rather than anarchist organization.

Diversity of tactics:
For those inside the trouble, no explanation is necessary.
For those outside the trouble, no explanation is possible. _ Belfast wall spraying.

Terrorist or Freedom Fighter is the same term, so if applicable, "blowback guerrilla" or "counterattack guerrilla" seems a better term.
A Demonstrator is a different species entirely, and their temporary demonstration is finished when they go back to their other life.

Why did the attacks happen?
I view this situation as a war between the haves and the have nots. If the wealthy do not begin to share, more equitably, the wealth of the world, the poor are going to come and take it. Capitalism cannot continue to base their economic theory on the the principle that the poor have too much and the wealthy do not have enough. (jsg would add. Western countries have been sucking the oil out of the Middle East for about 70 years now. Most of the inhabitants of those countries remain desperately poor. The western industrialized world cannot continue to ignore these people.

Controlled for the rich in the 1930s Canadian police focussed on unions of workers, students and political idealists. The horrific Sept 11 attack caught Canada and America off guard because the police are still wrongly focussing resources on concerned patriots, and intellectuals- eg: demonstations- eg APEC and FTAA in Quebec city April 19. There is no evidence that these protestors are about to rise up and expropriate the extra toys of their rich bosses. The liberals $6 billion security budget won't change the police from arresting their friends instead of their enemies. Some things never change.

The Parable of the Sheep by Charles Riggs

Not so long ago and in a pasture too uncomfortably close to here, a flock of sheep lived and grazed. They were protected by a dog, who answered to the master, but despite his best efforts from time to time a nearby pack of wolves would prey upon the flock.
One day a group of sheep, bolder than the rest, met to discuss their dilemma. "Our dog is good, and vigilant, but he is one and the wolves are many. The wolves he catches are not always killed, and the master judges and releases many to prey again upon us, for no reason we can understand. What can we do? We are sheep, but we do not wish to be food, too!"
One sheep spoke up, saying "It is his teeth and claws that make the wolf so terrible to us. It is his nature to prey, and he would find any way to do it, but it is the tools he wields that make it possible. If we had such teeth, we could fight back, and stop this savagery." The other sheep clamored in agreement, and they went together to the old bones of the dead wolves heaped in the corner of the pasture, and gathered fang and claw and made them into weapons.
That night, when the wolves came, the newly armed sheep sprang up with their weapons and struck at them, crying, "Begone! We are not food!" and drove off the wolves, who were astonished. When did sheep become so bold and so dangerous to wolves? When did sheep grow teeth? It was unthinkable!
The next day, flush with victory and waving their weapons, they approached the flock to pronounce their discovery. But as they drew nigh, the flock huddled together and cried out, "Baaaaaaaadddd! Baaaaaddd things! You have bad things! We are afraid! You are not sheep!"
The brave sheep stopped, amazed. "But we are your brethren!" they cried. "We are still sheep, but we do not wish to be food. See, our new teeth and claws protect us and have saved us from slaughter. They do not make us into wolves, they make us equal to the wolves, and safe from their viciousness!"
"Baaaaaaad!" cried the flock, "the things are bad and will pervert you, and we fear them. You cannot bring them into the flock!" So the armed sheep resolved to conceal their weapons, for although they had no desire to panic the flock, they wished to remain in the fold. But they would not return to those nights of terror, waiting for the wolves to come.
In time, the wolves attacked less often and sought easier prey, for they had no stomach for fighting sheep who possessed tooth and claw even as they did. Not knowing which sheep had fangs and which did not, they came to leave sheep out of their diet almost completely except for the occasional raid, from which more than one wolf did not return.
Then came the day when, as the flock grazed beside the stream, one sheep's weapon slipped from the folds of her fleece, and the flock cried out in terror again, "Baaaaaad! You still possess these evil things! We must ban you from our presence!"
And so they did. The great chief sheep and his council, encouraged by the words of their advisors, placed signs and totems at the edges of the pasture forbidding the presence of hidden weapons there. The armed sheep protested before the council, saying, "It is our pasture, too, and we have never harmed you! When can you say we have caused you hurt? It is the wolves, not we, who prey upon you. We are still sheep, but we are not food!" But the flock drowned them out with cries of "Baaaaaaddd! We will not hear your clever words! You and your things are evil and will harm us!"
Saddened by this rejection, the armed sheep moved off and spent their days on the edges of the flock, trying from time to time to speak with their brethren to convince them of the wisdom of having such teeth, but meeting with little success. They found it hard to talk to those who, upon hearing their words, would roll back their eyes and flee, crying "Baaaaddd! Bad things!"
That night, the wolves happened upon the sheep's totems and signs, and said, "Truly, these sheep are fools! They have told us they have no teeth! Brothers, let us feed!" And they set upon the flock, and horrible was the carnage in the midst of the fold. The dog fought like a demon, and often seemed to be in two places at once, but even he could not halt the slaughter.
It was only when the other sheep arrived with their weapons that the wolves fled, only to remain on the edge of the pasture and wait for the next time they could prey, for if the sheep were so foolish once, they would be so again. This they did, and do still.
In the morning, the armed sheep spoke to the flock, and said, "See? If the wolves know you have no teeth, they will fall upon you. Why be prey? To be a sheep does not mean to be food for wolves!" But the flock cried out, more feebly for their voices were fewer, though with no less terror, "Baaaaaaaad! These things are bad! If they were banished, the wolves would not harm us! Baaaaaaad!"
So they resolved to retain their weapons, but to conceal them from the flock; to endure their fear and loathing, and even to protect their brethren if the need arose, until the day the flock learned to understand that as long as there were wolves in the night, sheep would need teeth to repel them.
They would still be sheep, but they would not be food!

2001 0912: Yesterday's Bush called the horrific loss of life as "terrorism"; but today Bush has switched the word to "war" instead of "terrorism". Israel benefits from the switch to the word "war" to focus the world into blaming Afghanistan; and, while away from the media, the Israel tanks which ring villages are free to open fire to clean up the Palestinian rabble dying in their surrounded fishbowl.

Ravi Butra's final forecast of the death of communism and capitalism may have begun yesterday, because Bush said "war" to describe the destruction of The World Trade Centre, which WAS the living symbol of Capitalism. The term "guerrilla war" seems more accurate than "war" or "terrorist"; and "counterattack" more accurate than "attack"; and, several TV commentators have said that for the USA it is "payback time".

Shortly, he can launch an attack on Afghanistan to try to kill Osama Bin Laden, not realizing he is now too late because the Muslims have become too strong.
Afghanistan swallowed the British and the Russian armies.


Today ( 2001 0912 ) Bush has the support of his citizens to defend corporate democracy; but, in the months ahead when the adrenoline decreases, will the American swing-vote sector switch loyalties back to the Anti-globalism juggernaut against our Canadian and American 'corporate democracy' policy of government ? Much depends on whether the guerrilla war which began against the USA yesterday continues as successfully as their first strike. This will help determine whether the USA and Israel can boss all the other countries into punishing any country which steps out of line. The US drove Arabs to chemical and bio-weapons of mass destruction by allowing Israel to have the atom bomb. No sane military in the area would be expected to leave themselves defenseless. Soon they may try it out on North America.

Things appear hopeless for the US, because since Vietnam chased out the US by using guerilla warfare, the US has little choice but to remain totally vulnerable. Gathering political allies from this first guerilla war strike, the guerrilla army's next attack on the US may well have a press conference on the Internet with signatories from 5 countries taking credit for the attack. On the USA's present course of alienating and doublecrossing it's allies in trade and defence treaties, the guerrilla signatories could number 8 or 10 countries in a few years.

Further, the guerrilla attack showed off by flaunted with a conventional attack, the most difficult model of attack- a multi-headed attack concentrated into a few hours. This newsy show style is unlikely to be repeated, when far more devestating guerrilla attacks are a thousand times more easy to perform. Also the unique attack's use of the Boeing as a weapon cannot easily be repeated after new anti-highjack tools are implemented. In the future, one man with no training could inject mad cow prions into animals from California to Alaska, from chickens to cows or elk or dogs. Two attack types which are executed at the same time such as mad cow or anthrax, and even easier, poison gas with the wind blowing in the right direction could take out whole cities- you name the type of gas, then regular or designer effects. No one needs to give up his life as a suicide bomber, any time he gets the urge to teach the US a lesson. Hopefully this terrible scenerio is a fiction; but, the prudent reporter will watch to report stories about any new changes in emmigration statistics. As the people experience the coming attacks, they must be kept informed and protected by local online newspaper as mainline newspapers are always up to 24 hours out of date.

Everyone cannot flee North America at the same time. The airport terminals are too small and too few and themselves may be targeted, so if worse comes to worse, please DO NOT PANIC.

The most interesting question was not addressed in the mainstream media- why did the guerrilla army go so easy on us this time, when they could have permanently solved their problems by damaging our people on a scale a thousand times larger ? I don't know the answer, but I thank the guerrillas for this leniency and for a tiny bit of respect for human life by at least keeping what the US Army calls "collateral damage" down to a few thousand when they could have killed millions of our people with chemical or bio-weapons of mass destuction. Yet they did murder thousands of people, and the US is now desparate enough to attack every country they choose as soon as they gathering political support from the 19 Hato countries and other countries vulnerable to economic sanctions. That includes every country; now the unusual- even countries of little strategic trading value. Those countries that do not comply with all US directives are vulnerable for trial at The Haig for war crimes against humanity, so country leaders around the world, you had better give support to your friend The United States of America.

I couldn't possibly disagree more.

Since the savage attacks of September 11th, we have seen the unfolding of a national ritual denunciation of this crime that is much more than an expression of outrage and sadness.

If the ritual is performed incompletely or incorrectly, one risks the charge of heresy.

It's the new McCarthyism, and this is the new loyalty oath.

A disciplined military-financial-industrial press is harmonizing us, and the orchestra director is our de facto executive branch.

Heresies include:

(1) the failure to call for war or support out "leaders" when they call for war,
(2) the denial that this can be reduced to a test between good and evil,
(3) the refusal to accept official explanations,
(4) the temerity to suggest that our own rulers have committed equally offensive actions,
(5) and finally, that our own financial, political, military, and intelligence establishments bear a portion of the blame.

I retired from the Army in February, 1996, after some 24 years of service.

"Special operations" was my field.

That gives me a perspective on this military-macho posturing that seems to have seized the whole country.

The military, industrial, and political establishment are cashing in on this tragedy, and it shouldn't serve as an excuse to be stupid.

This can not be allowed to provoke a retreat by progressives.

The admirable and poignant solidarity of New Yorkers, and many across the nation, is being contaminated by a military fetish, a mindless phallic nationalism, and instead of seeking solutions, we are seeking enemies.

And we'll find them.

History sent us a warning, but we're not listening.

Herr Hitler announced with a familiar combination of grief-stricken solemnity and manly outrage, on February 27, 1933, "Gentlemen, the Reichstag is on fire."

We ought to pay attention to this.

We've got to interrupt this war talk, and we've got to do it aggressively and on a mass scale, because MUCH is at stake.

And we've got to interrupt it with more than an appeal against xenophobia and the abrogation of civil liberties.

We are responsible to shift attention from the motives of "Usama bin Laden and his legions of demonic followers" to the motives of the Bush Administration and the capitalist governments of Europe.

I've come to assume, from my own experience, that anything I hear from the State Department or the FBI is apt to be... less than truthful.

Officialdom doesn't make statements to represent reality.

It constructs stories to pursue interests.

Whether those stories conform to reality is incidental.

This attack will benefit the militarists in this country far more than it will benefit anyone else, and I remember the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution.

Progressives in the US have reason to be afraid.

This unforgivable act of inhumanity will be used as an excuse to crack down on dissent here, to engage in military aggression against other peoples, and to whip up an already more-than-latent anti-Muslim xenophobia.

But the key thing to understand here is that this is pulling a lot of political and economic cookies out of the fire, or so dangerous buffoons like Bush believe, and is leading us to disaster.

There is quite simply no security system in the world that can not be bypassed, and there is no way to protect absolutely against these kinds of attacks.

When we accept this premise, we have to conclude that overwhelming violence in retaliation for these kinds of acts will not bring such acts to an end, but escalate the levels of overall violence.

An Israeli-like response will bring with it an Israeli-like situation, on a global level. In a very short step, we can tumble from chauvinism into the abyss of repression and tribalism.

U. S. military might and the willingness to use it is not only not the solution, it's a powerful contributing factor to terrorism, when it is combined with the arrogance and impunity of our foreign policies.

We have the capability to overwhelm any conventional military force in the world, so no one in the world has the option to oppose those forces in a conventional way.

When those forces or allied forces are the ultimate guarantors of intolerable situations, or when the sovereignty of nations is swept aside, unconventional means will inevitably be employed.

If I would rather die fighting than go on living as I am, and I can't build a Tomahawk Cruise missile, then I can learn to fly a Boeing 767.

Progressives can't withdraw from the scene.

That's why action, even action with risks, is so critical.

Mark further pointed out that events are out of the control of the global bosses, who are now blundering from one reaction to the next in a system that was already incredibly unstable.

I think it's absolutely certain, with the course we're now on, that there WILL be massive dislocation, suffering, and degradation-and we shall not be spared this time.

Do not disobey any Lycos Chat hosts, moderators, or other Lycos employee or representative or interfere with any action by any Lycos Chat host or other Lycos employee or representative to redress any violation of these Terms and Conditions.
Do not access any Lycos Communities' service after your account or access has been terminated by Lycos.
Do not upload, post, email, or otherwise transmit, or post links to any Content that facilitates hacking.
Do not interfere with or disrupt the Products and Services or servers or networks connected to the Products and Services, or disobey any requirements, procedures, policies or regulations of networks connected to the Products and Services, including without limitation Lycos Network Chat hosts.
